CAN 2024: DR Congo-Mauritania in Lubumbashi

The Leopards of DR Congo

After several days of wanderings, we (finally) know the place where the meeting between the DR Congo and Mauritania will be played, on March 24, in qualifying for CAN 2024 (Group I). It will be played in Lubumbashi, at the Kamalondo stadium, owned by TP Mazembe.
The African Football Confederation (CAF) had announced to the Congolese federation that the Martyrs stadium in Kinshasa was not approved. For a few days, the body had hinted that the match would be played at the Stade Japoma in Douala (Cameroon), at the request of Sébastien Desabre, the French coach of the Leopards.
Except that he had specified to FECOFA that his number 1 choice was for Lubumbashi, and the number 2 choice for a modern stadium, located in sub-Saharan Africa.

This correspondence, which had leaked, caused an uproar in DR Congo. The political power had indeed been suspected of not wanting this match in Lubumbashi,
stronghold of Moïse Katumbi, president of TP Mazembe and candidate for the presidential election which will take place in 2024, for fear of hearing descending from the stands of Kamalondo slogans hostile to Félix Tshisekedi, the current head of state. Finally, the match will take place in the capital of Haut-Katanga. The return is scheduled for March 28, in Nouakchott
